SALEWA alpineXtrem Team Expedition Summer 2010
Mountain Blog from Grønland
August 2010 sees the start of the next international SALEWA alpineXtrem Team expedition to colder northern climes. The target is an unclimbed big wall in eastern Greenland. The SALEWA mountaineers are planning to climb this untouched 1,400-metre wall in alpine style. Following a successful first ascent, Roger Schaeli (Switzerland), Daniel Kopp (Austria) and Simon Gietl (South Tirol), will attempt to free climb their new route.
With a total area of more than 2.1 million km2, Greenland is the largest island on the planet. Less than 20% of its surface area is ice free, the north coast lies only 700 km from the North Pole and its average temperature at night only exceeds 0 °C during three months of the year. As grinning members of the expedition team put it: “These are ideal conditions for the type of mountain climbing challenge we enjoy.”
The alpinists Roger Schaeli (Switzerland), Daniel Kopp (Austria) and Simon Gietl (South Tyrol) will be travelling to eastern Greenland in August. Their objective is clear: to be the first to climb a 1,100 metre high big wall in the middle of the wilderness. Yet these northern expanses hold more than just challenges for mountain climbing, for the logistical and environmental demands are also considerable. After all, Greenland is relatively sparsely populated, with fewer than 55,000 inhabitants. The roads to be travelled are long – where there even are any - and must be travelled alone. It is clear that these three climbers, hoping to be the first to ascend this wall, will not be able to rely on a transportation or emergency infrastructure such as that in Central Europe. Yet this is something that Daniel, Roger and Simon are actively seeking. “Just journeying to the foot of this wall will be an expedition in itself," says Roger Schaeli (32), who has already been able to record successes such as ascents of the infamous Patagonian trio of Torre Egger, Cerro Torre and Cerro Stanhardt, as well as renowned first ascents in the West Alps and India, in spite of his youth. Even during their expedition to the base of the wall, the three mountain climbers are hoping to do without technical aids such as motorised vehicles wherever possible. And once they have started climbing the wall, there will only be two things they can rely on: their skill and their equipment. The latter originates in its entirety from SALEWA. As mountain sports multispecialists, the company headquartered in Bolzano, South Tyrol, will be providing these athletes with everything they need for their time in these northern heights: ice-worthy tents, expedition sleeping bags, innovative securing equipment, backpacks, climbing boots and highly functional apparel from the 5Continents (for the journey there) and Alpine Extreme collections to meet the high technical and functional requirements.
Be a part of the action and follow the three climbers live on their Greenland expedition. Newsnetz/Tagesanzeiger.ch is now launching a multimedia, interactive MOUNTAIN BLOG. There, Roger, Daniel and Simon will report daily on their first ascent in Greenland – live via satellite from the 1,400-metre big wall. Photographer Thomas Ulrich will transmit the photos and videos.
