The stuff of winter dreams

The stuff of winter dreams!

Whoever has been developing and producing successful mountain sports apparel for 75 years, knows how to use the right fabric in the right place. In the coming winter too, SALEWA will be focussing on highly functional, technical materials. Qualities such as freedom of movement, comfort when wearing, and confidence in colour and styling will be considered just as much as the ultimate protection against wind, water, and the cold.
A specialist dealer in mountain sports apparel must have an extensive practical knowledge of functional fabrics. In the lead-up to the winter 2010/11 season, the product developers at SALEWA have spent much time and energy in answering the essential questions: which materials and fabrics will guarantee the greatest functionality of the finished product? What goes where? What must be considered in tailoring? Keeping with the SALEWA tradition, we add style to content – which aspects of the design support the functionality? Which stylistic elements and colour palettes can create an eloquent and assured appearance?
The two ranges Alpine Active and 5 Continents are a revelation to these questions. Both collections have once again succeeded in transferring expertise from the extreme professional end of mountain sports into products which will meet the needs of mountain hikers, snowshoe walkers, and the growing group of active world travellers.
5 Continents offers this target group a wide selection in apparel over the coming months. SALEWA‘s expertise in the applications of down is demonstrated to effect in this range. From the innovative 3-in-1 jacket Spruce (for men) or Elm (for women) constructed of functional Powertex® with detachable down-filled reversible jacket Down, through the snugly warm, windproof and water-resistant Alder Stormwall jacket (for men) in popular all-over Madras design, to the practical reversible Conker (for men) down vest. Female fans of the outdoors will find plenty of feminine highlights in the 5Continents range. Among these is the Fir down jacket, a long cut, down-filled favourite with a barely noticeable weight thanks to the 150-denier, highly tear-resistant Ripstop nylon. Also the particularly warm 90/10 goose down-filled classic, Coldfighter, which is perfectly suited for trips to the alpine realms, the featherlight Maple jacket padded with Primaloft Eco 100g, and the very versatile Yew vest in a stylish ribbed fabric. And the crowning item for both men and women? The casual XL beanie Balvi or the Talski beret.
Just as there are many different kinds of destinations and types of excursions, so also is the material selection in 5 Continents varied and versatile. Deep matt finish meets shining and iridescent surfaces, soft fluffy fleece surrounds a dense nylon fabric, retro-styled surfaces enliven coldly technical materials. Sustainably produced wool and high quality 90/10 goose down on the one side, technical Primaloft Eco and innovative fleece materials on the other. Where the sportsperson is out in the open longer, moving faster, and using more exertion, that‘s where Alpine Active comes into its own. For the first time the collection is taking into account the changes in
user patterns due to climate change. Turning away from pure winter styles, towards a 3-season range
that includes autumn and spring. Protection from cold is a priority, complemented by defence against
the specific weather impact of autumn and spring.
The materials deployed are tuned to cope with this broad spectrum of application. In the outer layer we use Powertex Ultimate 2L with a hydrostatic head of 20,000 mm and a breathability of 20,000 g/ m2/24h as well as Winter Stormwall from Alpine, and Plain Woven fabric. For insulation we use high quality 80/20 goose down, Primaloft-ECO products, and depending on the application and intended usage, various Polarlite® Fleece materials. POLARLITE DYNASTRETCH is the best solution for optimal freedom of movement. And with the DRYTON Bamboo fabric, our product developers succeeded in achieving natural moisture wicking with a comfortable feeling to wear, and natural anti-bacterial and odour-suppressing properties.
The highlights: The Feolin Highloft jacket (His and Her versions) is extremely good at retaining warmth, thanks to the combination of Highloft fleece und softshell inserts. The elastic SALEWA body mapping technique ensures an amazingly exact fit, and the Powertex® fabric protects at the shoulder areas will stand up to torrents of rain. The versatile and extremely stretchable Evon, (His and Her versions) which can be worn with liner, combines a very capable Powertex® shell with a featherlight zip-in inner jacket made from environmentally friendly Primaloft Eco and warm stretchable Dynastretch inserts. Jura is a minimalist style of winter jacket. The wearer feels equally at home on the mountain or in the valley. When required it can be worn with a warm liner. Spey is the liner jacket of the Alpine Active range (His and Her versions). It can be zipped into all shell jackets in the range. Last but not least we present the Catacol model (His and Her versions): a light, long-cut and very comfortable functional jacket. Both waterproof and windproof due to the stretchable Powertex®, with removable hood, and for use in winter a liner can be zipped in within seconds.
